Spearfishing Restriction Removed on Houghton Lake

After nearly 75 years, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources spearfishing prohibition on Houghton Lake in Roscommon County has been removed. This removal will allow for additional angling opportunities on this 20,044 acre lake.

This opportunity was created thanks to Fisheries Order 219, signed by DNR Director Keith Creagh at October 2012 Natural Resources Commission Meeting in Ontonagon. The order also allows for crossbows to be added to the list of acceptable spearing gear for anglers spearfishing in Michigan.

Both opportunities – spearfishing on Houghton Lake and the use of crossbows when spearfishing – went in to immediate effect on October 11, 2012.
